Does anyone know if it's possible to extend a primary partition into a logical partition without losing data?
I have a win2k server with 2GB allocated as the primary partition for drive C: and 2GB allocated as a logical drive D: . Both partions are on Disk 0 which is listed as a basic disk. I would like to open the entire space (4GB) up to drive C: as I am beginning to run low on disk space there. I'm using hardware RAID 5. Thanks for any help you can provide.

What I can think is to use partition magic to extend your C drive size from D. But D drive will still exist with smaller space.

Thanks for the input. Do you know what version of Partion Magic I should be using? Leaving drive D: in place doesn't bother me too much, as long as I can utilize some of the space for drive C: without any adverse effects to the server. Thanks again.

partition magic will not work on server. You will need server magic and i believe the latest version is 7.02 Thanks

Thanks Erik, I'll give that a try.

If I remember my classes right you could convert your basic disk to a dynamic disk (right click and select Dynamic Disk)and be able to adjust partitions.

FWIW,

You are correct in converting it to Dynamic disk. The problem introduced here is that if you have downlevel clients (pre-W2K) they will not be able to read infomation on the disk and this could cause major problems especially if you are you System policies and they are stored on the server Thanks

Hmmm... Maybe I'm missing something here. My understanding was that if you convert to a dynamic disk you won't be able to dual-boot with pre-Win2k OSes. I didn't think that converting to dynamic disks had any impact on clients across the network.

???

Thanks for the feed back. I don't have any pre win2k clients so my major concern is maintaining the integrity of the server. I'll do a little more research on the effects of switching to dynamic disk, it sure seems like the simplest way to go as long as there are no adverse side effects.

You are right on the dual boot part. My apologies. The only article i could remember was that downlevel clients cannot access it. That does not mean shares(I think)
here is an article on Dynamic Disk. Also i am testing the sharing to downlevel clients right now will let you know my findings Thanks

There is no problems upgrading to dynamic disks on your server, I have actually 32 servers, all dynamics and maybe 90% of Win98 clients. I actually experience no problems accessing shares, map drive, etc... The only issue that I know is that if you already have a partition on a basic disk, you wont be able to extend it. The partition has to be created on a dynamic disk.

P.S. be careful if you have SCSI Adaptec 2940 adapter, 3 of my servers has that and wont upgrade to dynamic, I had to reformat and reinstall.
