I have a Compaq Proliant DL360 server with two mirrored 9 gig drives and on the C: drive is 5 gigs of space with 2.3 gigs left and the D: drive has 13 gigs with 228mb left.My question is we have ordered two 36 gig drives to replace the 9 gig ones. The drives are both hot plugable. What is the best way to approach switching the drives and transfering all the data from the old drives to the new drives? Thanks in advance.

Sorry I forgot to tell you that the Compaq server is running windows NT 4.0 with service pack 5.

If you're using hardware raid with a COMPAQ Raid controller, then you can replace one drive at a time and let it finish the rebuild process. Once one drive is done rebuilding insert the second drive and let it do the same.

If you want to check the status of the rebuild run the Array Configuration Utility in the OS or at POST and there will be a counter on the bottom left hand corner showing you the progress.

Once again this is all valid if you are running hardware raid with a compaq raid controller.

Good luck.

The above procedure works for RAID5 configs, have not had a need to test it on a RAID1 (mirroring) configuration but it should work.

You will still have to extend the drive partitions using something like Partition Magic though. -----------------------------------------------------

It definately works for mirrors also in a hardware raid setup so that is not an issue. Your right TheLad that he will need something like partition magic to use the additional space he acquires. Or you can just do a control+D to accomodate the new space.

Thanks guys I am using a raid 1+0 array and if I understand your response all I have to do is replace one drive at a time and after that one rebuilds itself I replace the other one ,then use partition magic or something simular to expand the drive with no space.Sorry if I sound like I am repeating what the response are but I'm just trying to make sure I get it right.Besides having a good backup there is no other pre configuring or setups before I yank the drive out ? Thanks again.

You're right. Just make sure you have a backup and go for it. I would recommend having the latest updated firmware for the harddrives and the controller, but it's not too critical. Just keep a backup just in case things don't go your way.
Good Luck with your upgrade.
