Disk defrag without human intervention

Hi ppl,

I’m making a .BAT file that make a lot of operations and runs during the night. In the middle of that operations I need to do a disk defrag in Windows 2000 professional.
How can I do that?
- I don’t know how to start the disk defrag
- How can I do that without having to click “Start” in the defrag application?

I believe you'll have to run this as a Windows scheduled task.

You can access the native Win2k APIs for defragmenting your drives on a command line, such as a batch file, by using the Sysinternals freeware utility Config:

contig -s C:\*.*
Contig will defragment all files and subfolders on the C: harddrive.

If your purpose is to defragment regularly you can try some of the third party solutions that do it automatically. These allow you to set the scheduling and perform the task in the background.
