Disconnecting VPN Hangs Windows XP

I am using a cisco vpn connection on a Windows XP client with SP2 and the problem that I am having is when I disconnect from the VPN and try to open any app or even explorer, my system hangs for about 10 minutes. At this point I can not even open IE...even though I have connection. Any ideas? I am running VPN CLient version 5.0.02.0090
