message reads: server prompt: server xxx not found at xxxtime
keeps repeating at regular intervals. what do I need to do to the server left running netware 4.11 so that this server does not keep looking for the server that is no longer there? something I should probably have done before I downed and disconnected the second server?

Did you remove Directory Services from the Server before you downed and disconnected the Server?

If not, you should reconnect the Server, power it up and once the Server is up and operational, LOAD INSTALL and REMOVE DIRECTORY SERVICES!!!

Good Luck!

As Sal said, you should NEVER turn a server off for a lengthy period of time without removing it from the NDS. -----------------------------------------------------

Sal, having informed me of the mistake I made, and now that I can't reconnect the server due to it being sent out of town, is there anyway possible to fix the problem? Egads, what have I done! Knew I should have checked more into it before I downed it and disconnected it, but was rushing around to get stuff together so I only had to make one trip!

Does (or did) the server have any NDS replicas on it? You should still be able to check in NDS Manager (SYS:pUBLIC\WIN32\NDSMGR32.EXE) even though the server is disconnected - you will get errors because the server is not there though! -----------------------------------------------------

We are in the process of upgrading to NW6 on this server. Should I just redo the whole thing from scratch, wipe the server clean and go back to the beginning with NW6? Will this correct the error? Also, I was planning on doing this by upgrading rather than fdisk and formatting. Would running the upgrade fix it? I will check NDS when I get to work tomorrow, I am at home now, and the darn thing won't let me in from here! Thanks

If they were the only two servers in your NDS, it may be something to consider. Do not forget, however, that you will loose all of your NDS when you do this: User accounts, groups, policies (if applicable), rights on directories on the server etc...

If it is not too much hassle, the experience of doing a NW6 installation from scratch might come in handy to you! -----------------------------------------------------

Considering the problem I had just removing the second server, are there any crucial tips you can share with me on doing a complete reinstall? I want to wipe this server clean, and do a fresh install of NW6. What should I look out for from the beginning? I have enough NW admin skills to rebuild the directories, accounts and keep the rights straight, I hope!

Here is a link to a fairly comprehensive TID that discribes the steps for removing a Server from Directory Services after its crashed... or disconnected in your case.)

The Server has to be manually removed from the DS Replica Ring. Since you only have One server, it should be fairly easy and clean. Be thankful you don't have hundreds of servers in a multi-tier'd DS Tree. Thats when it gets UGLY!!!

By the way, I have personally used this TID in the past with success.

Good Luck!

Salserocito: That link was just the ticket. Fixed me right up, haven't seen the error since!
