Has anyone here ever done a disaster recovery on a server using Networker? From reading the DR manual, I am getting hte impression that they expect you to completely rebuild the server rom scratch, then use Networker to recover files.

Is that really all this software does? I was under the impression that it assisted with the rebuild.

rgzimmer,

Are you talking about the backup server or a client?

If you are talking about the server, you will need to get the system up and running with an OS then load the Networker Server software and run the mmrecov utility to recover the media database and server configuraton (nsr.res and nsrjb.res files). Ater that you can run (assuming you have 6.1) nsrck -L7 to recover you client indexes.

After this is done you can recover the other data for your server.

If your server is really hosed you will need to recreate the filesystems and partitions before you can restore the data. If you want some additional assitance Legato does have NetWorker Recovery Manager (NRM) for NT and Solaris that help automate this procedure even more. With this (on Solaris) you can boot from a network contact the NRM server give it the hostname and file systems to recover and it can take care of most of the work for you.

On NT NRM will create Boot CD's to assist in recovery.

You always have to rebuild a Server befor you can restore Files on a crashed System.
for example: Your WINT NT Server System crashed.
You only need to rebuild the Server and have to install
the Legato Networker Client to rebuild the savesets.

- system state/ registry
- Repairdisk
- Files .....

IF Your Legato Networker Server crashed then you need the disaster Recovery.
Then you have lost all Information about the Media Database and file Index.

- Rebuild the Server
- Install Legato Networker Server
- Search for the last bootstrap information with scanner command
- Restore the media Database "mmrecov"

Then the Networker rebuild the Database.

If it´s not right, please correct me

I'm referring to rebuilding clients. Other backup vendors offer a recovery in the form of a floppy that boots the system and recovers the files.

Legato's DR guide is poor in that it does not walk you through the procedure step by step. Why should I need to patch the OS before recovering if the backup has all the updated fils and registry settings?

In my mind, I see this:

Install OS and partition the drives. (2 hours, if everything works correctly on the first try)
Patch the OS (2 hours)
Install Legato (15 minutes)
Perform system recovery, which is poorly documented. (unknown)

This looks like an all day event to me for just one server. What if my datacenter gets hit by a plane, which could happen considering our proximity to DFW airport. One of the runways is literally on the other side of the street. Recovery takes forever

It seems most other leading vendors have announced a Bare Metal Restore Option to address this need. Does Legato have plans to come out with such an option anytime soon?
