My DC/Exchange server crashed recently, and I just realized that I only have the backup for the Exchange 2000 database, but not the ADS.

In this case, is there anyway that I can still retrive each user' inbox data and have it export into a PST file?

thanks

Henry

The Exchange 2000 database IS the user's mailbox including the inbox...

yes, but how can I retrive user' mailbox directly from the backup datafile without my ADS running?

thanks

Well, you'll need to do a full DR on your server. I assume that you've gone against the recommendations and only have a single DC. So you'll need to create all of your users. Then restore the database and link the users to the mailbox.

You'll need to really triple check the organisation, site and server names for the exchange org, use the same service packs for windows and exchange and then restore. If the server has gone, you've probably lost the catalogues too.

yes, I lost everything except a backup of my Exchange data file. instead of rebuilding the ADS and exchange server, is there anyway that I can directly retrive/access user inbox from the backup file?

thanks

nope. what backup are you using?

In your case, I'd use dial tone stores, set up a second DC immediately (an old PC will do fine) and restore when you can. At least you'll get email flowing again.
