I am carrying out a Disaster Recovery exercise on a spare SUN machine, which is attached to the network. It's hostname is 'sparesun'. Named as to avoid conflict with true host (as this is on network also).

Is it possible to use nwrecover to connect to the "true" server, called 'findata' and recover the filesystems to 'sparesun'?

'sparesun' is not backed up and has never been defined as a Networker client. It is not possible to run nwrecover from this machine.

I know I can get around the problem by disconnecting the true server from the network and renaming 'sparesun' to 'findata'. This would allow me to recover using nwrecover but I would like to keep both servers attached to the network if possible.

If you install the Networker client software of 'sparesun', then you should be able to use nwrecover to connect to the server and recover the 'true' clients files to 'sparesun'. In order to do this, you need to give 'sparesun' access to recover the original systems files.

From nwadmin, select the original client in the client configuration window and under the 'Remote Access' field you will need to enter 'sparesun'.

When performing the recovery, execute nwrecover on 'sparesun' (after the Legato client software has been installed). In nwrecover, select 'Client' from the Change menu at the top of the screen. Enter the name of the system you whose files you wish to recover and assuming you setup the Remote Access field correctly, you should be able to browse that systems indexes and recover its files.
