Disappearing Text in Appleworks 6.2

I have an issue with Appleworks where the text disappears when scrolling beyond just the viewable paragraph. It's still there and can be highlighted, but for some bizarre reason the text turns all white (e.g., disappears). This happens in more than one document, so it's reproduceable.

Any ideas what might be causing it and how to fix it?
