Disappearing Session Variables

I am using the Apache Server included with Oracle Internet Application Server 1.1. The main problem I am having with this environment is that session variables are timed out/cratered/trashed/nulled whenever the user uses either the browser's Back button or the Refresh button. This application was extremely stable in the IIS 4.0 environment.
Any kind of help or suggestion would be extremely helpful.
