Disappearing Optical Drives in WIN XP

Newbie w/ a perplexing problem. Basic story is continuing to have CD-RW & DVD-ROM fail to respond within timeout period and then disappear from system. Reboot resets drives only to eventually timeout again. Have a P-4 1.6GHz, 512 MB RAM D845BG Mobo. To shorten post, see full background problem/system details posted on another site:
