My daughter has somehow managed to lose her CD-ROM in Windows 98. It was working ok a couple of days ago but now when she tries to access a CD it tells her the drive isn't accessible.

I've looked at the startup and the BIOS detects the CD-ROM correctly. When I check W98 it says there isn't a CD-ROM. Also when I check Device Manager in System properties no flags were present against the Primary and Secondary IDE Controller (dual fifo. The mechanics of the CD ROM Drive does appear to work but doesn't appear in My Computer. As a result I cannot access it.

Any clues as what might have happened and how I get over it?

delete them all from Device Manager and Reinstall them....
assuming this is the only Optical drive installed and it is connected on the Secondary Primary as Master.

Before you do this, make sure you have any special updated INF file for your Busmaster controller you may need, and make sure that INF is in the \WINDOWS\Inf folder....check the Date/Time and size on the files for exactness. You would normally have the correct one there, BUT, who knows what hardware you have (mobo/chipset/cpu/)...is this a major manu. computer??
Can use (Free) 'Home Edition' of "Everest" from for all hardware info needs

Have 98 CDROM handy;
Boot into Safe Mode and go into Device Manager (use View devices by TYPE) and expand the CDROM key and choose the CDROM device and Remove...don't reboot.
Go to Hard Disk Controllers and Remove the Busmaster IDE Controller...(not the primary and secondary, it won't allow you).

You're sure there are no 'duplicates' or doubles or ghost devices listed while in Safe Mode??? if so, FIRST, just remove those only...along with any devices with an ! or X or listed as UNKNOWN

What can I say it worked! I followed your instructions to a "T" and the CD ROM appeared. Two thumbs up for that fix!
