disabling AD replication then demoting DC

having problems with the replication of AD between 2 DC's so i want to demote one of them. is it possible to disable replication between them then demote the one that is causing the problem, or does replication need to occur between them, they are the only 2 DC's in the domain

That would depend on your tollerance for lost data. You would more than likely lose something no matter which server you demote if replication hasn't been working. I'd recommend fixing replication first.
