I disabled the USB in the Windows XP device manager, and would like to bring it back. It has disappeared from the list of hardware, and I don't know how to re-install it.

If you use the Recovery Console it has the Disable or Enable command for Services and Drivers. If you use the exact name by which windows refers to USB (Universal Serial Bus controllers) you might be able to enable it via the Recovery Console.

Start Windows in "Safe Mode". You can do this from the boot menu which is available by pressing the "F8" key before the graphical windows startup screen.

In safe mode, you can see all hardware from the device manager, even those which had previously been installed but no longer exist. In normal mode, device manager will only show you active hardware.

There were two BIOS entries for USB: one for assign an IRQ to USB, and one to disable\enable USB. I had missed the enable\disable switch.

Thanks for the help guys.
