We have policies to lock down users as tightly as possible however if they figure out the name of the server they can use the UNC and start browsing the network.

Is there a way of disabling IE from using the UNC? I understand that you can separate the browser from the system (Windows 9x). If there is a registry setting it would be easier and better for the time being.

Thanks,

Jason

Why don't you lock down the server so that users do not have permission to access it? If all you're concerned about is restricting access to the server, and not other workstations on the network, then restrict usage at the server level. Nate Gagne

Jason,

This works for the local file system, not sure about UNC paths:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

Right-click on the Explorer key, choose new>DWORD value, name it NoFileUrl and give it a value of 1.

We have locked down the server but one program the students use must have full rights by the user in order for it to work.

I have added the NoFileUrl but didn't block out UNC paths. However I found that if you add the DWORD="NoFileRun"=1 than it will prevent the UNC path from going anywhere. It will also disable the Run option in the Start Menu but that works for us.

Thanks for the tip!
