On my company laptop, less than a year old with XP Pro, there is the ability to disable the touchpad if another pointing device is detected; USB mouse, wireless, etc. On my personal laptop which is ~3 years old with XP Pro I can't find that feature. Does anyone have any idea how to get it in this 3 year old version? I hate having to chase the cursor around the screen due to contact with the touchpad while typing.

That would very much depend on the Laptop Make and model.

for instance on My Compaq, there's a button at the top of the touch pad, that when pressed disables the touch pad.

However without knowing the make and model its hard to say how to do it, or eve if it is at all possible.

Ignorance is not necessarily Bliss, case in point:
Unknown has caused an Unknown Error on Unknown and must be shutdown to prevent damage to Unknown.

It is sometimes a BIOS setup option, on older Dell Inspiron models, for example.

On my fairly old Toshiba Satellite Pro, I can press Fn + F9 to disable/enable my touchpad
