Hi there,

I am trying to track down a way to stop people being able to edit or save a Word document.

I can find info on how to do it in Excel, but not how to do it within Word.

Sorry if this has been asked before, but I can't seem to find anything using the search on here.

Cheers,

Con

You can't really stop people editing a document but you can stop them saving it, either with an Application DocumentBeforeSave event trap, or by intercepting the various Save commands - but there are quite a few of them (FileSave, FileSaveAs, etc.)

Of course, the user can bypass all this by disallowing macros.

Enjoy,
Tony

And you'll have to stop people doing copy/paste too ...

You can not stop any moderately knowledgable person from getting content out of a Word document. They are not secure. Never have been.

If you can see the document, you can get the content for your own purposes.

All you can do is slow down those who are not moderately knowledgeable. As Tony mentions, use an Application event like DocumentBeforeSace, or, rewrite (override) Sub FileSave, Sub FileSaveAs...etc.

If you want people not to be able to change a document, then use NTFS on all your machines, and change the permissions so they can not change it or take ownership of the file. Still wont prevent the save-as with a different name, but the original file will be safe.
