Disable onboard NIC

I have a Compaq 1600 with an onboard nic. Yesterday it died. I have added an intel card and am getting a link light, but cannot connect to the network. I have verified all the protocol settings and it looks fine. I tried to disable the onboard nic through the bios, but I get a message that it can't be disabled because it is integrated to the board. I think this is causing a conflict and thus, not connecting. Does anyone have any suggestions on this? My OS is NT4.

try to just manuver around it and disable it in the device manager and make sure that your new intel has the proper drivers and it should work. let me know if this solves your problem

Any ideas what it might be called in the devices. I don't see anything that hints at being a nic.

If the two NIC cards are sharing the same IRQ this may be causing your issue. Trying changing the IRQ for the new NIC in the BIOS.

If you're going into the BIOS anyway, you might be better off disabling the on-board NIC while you're there.

Thanks everyone for their help on this. It boiled down to using an Intel 82557 nic. I had tried two other Intel and a 3Com nic without success. A friend of mine said he had problems with other nics on NT4 and recommended trying the 82557, and it worked! Go figure! I can't wait to have this box upgraded like my others.
