I'm having a problem when I enabled DMA on my hard drive from Device
Manager. A game I purchased (MechWarrior 4) has a readme.txt file
that says:
Poor performance and instability: If you have DMA installed on a
computer running Windows 98 or Windows Millennium, make sure you
have DMA enabled. Enabling DMA will greatly improve performance and
stability.
To enable DMA
1. Close all open applications.
2. On the Windows taskbar, click Start, point to Settings, and
then click Control Panel.
3. Double-click System.
4. Click the Device Manager tab, and then double-click Disk
Drives.
5. Select the IDE/ Disk (hard drive), and then click the
Properties button.
6. Click the Settings tab, and then select the DMA check box.
7. To restart your machine with DMA enabled, click OK.
I did everything like it said to do. However, when I rebooted my
machine, my CD ROM Drive device was missing in Device Manager and a
yellow (!) was next to my Primary IDE controller (dual fifo)!! I
clicked the Performance tab on System Properties and noticed the
following:
Compatibility-mode paging reduces overall system performance.
Drive C is using MS-DOS compatibility mode file system.
Drive D is using MS-DOS compatibility mode file system.
This explains why my system is running slow, but I can't figure out
how to DISABLE DMA! All this by checking one little box!
Any help in this weird situation would be appreciated!
Thanks...
