Use both high speed (at home office) and phone (on the road) access to internet.

Recently I have noticed that, during high-speed use, the first time the browser window opens there is a delay of perhaps 5-10 seconds. At first I couldn't figure out why, but then noticed a status note in the bottom left corner "detect proxy settings". I have checked Tools | Internet Options | Advanced but there seems to be nothing there, I have also checked Tools | Internet Options | Communications | LAN Settings.. and it is set for "Automatically detect settings".

I'm sure I don't need this, but don't know how it got there, nor how to remove it, the detection of (or need to detect) proxy settings that is.

That's it - deselect that checkbox.

There is no reason to automaticly detect settings in your setting as smah noted.

Thanks both. So what does the detect settings do? Check only for proxy settings? Does it do anything else?
