Disable account without bouncing emails

Can anyone tell me how to still receive emails for a user that has been disabled (without transferring the address to another user)?

From what I've read Microsoft say that it should not stop the mailbox receiving emails but it does for me, they get bounced back to the sender.

On the disabled account do you have the Self account added with full mailbox rights and the Associated External permission applied? If not then give this a go, this should allow it to receive mail.
