We have a copy of Arcserve 2000 running on a Compaq NT 4 Server set to run a full nightly backup.

We did a test restore the other day and found that the directory listing of the tape contents had loads of missing files as if it had missed half the files on backup.

Instead of restoring a selection of individual files, we decided to try restoring an entire directory which reportedly had missing files to an alternative location on the hard drive.

Once the restore had completed we checked the directory and the missing files were there!

Does anyone know why the tape directory database is misreporting these files?

How long ago was it since your Arcserve database was purged of old records and packed?...might be time for it :) Also, when you do a merge db from a backup tape it does take a bit of time to enter the details into the database...try waiting 10 minutes after the merge before choosing your restore files....

You fail to mention whether you are running service pack 2 for AS2000. I would strongly recommend getting that installed if you haven't, there were some ugly issues fixed by sp1 and sp2.

Check the following things:

1. Make sure the "version history" that you've selected is the correct version you want to look at.

2. Check the "Session View" to browse the contents of the tape sessions. Do all the files appear in this view?

3. DO the file or directory names contain any unusual characters or are they excessively long? In unpatched configurations, the arcserve restore browser may not process certain filenames or lengthy pathnames correctly.
