HI, here is the problem, please offer advice. :)

I have a desktop computer running a 400mhz AMD 3DNOW, 138 RAM, a cdrom drive, floppy drive, and a 3D card. The laptop is running a Pentium 2. The laptop is not mine, but one that I borrowed from school to do my work at home on. However, ":(" I did some of my work on my desktop, and am trying to transfer it to the laptop. The files are over 10 MB, so using multiple disks is not the awnser! I have a serial cable that connects between the 2 pc's printer ports.

I set up the laptop as guest and the desktop as host, I also added IPX protocal to the network properties. I host with the Desktop, than try to connect with the laptop, but it gives me the error, unable to connect. the printer ports are working fine under system properties on both.

What is wrong?

Thanx,
Nate

OK, I'm confused. Are you trying to connect through the serial ports? If so, then you may need a null modem cable. I don't think the IPX protocol will work with serial ports or parallel ports.

Are you trying to use the parallel ports to connect? If so, you may need to set the ports to be bidirectional.

What software are you using to transfer the files?

how did you connect a serial cable to a parallel port, thats impressive !!! 2phat is correct you need to get a null modem cable. these usually have both 9 and 25 pin connectors at both ends so you can guarantee a connection to your computers. Odds on the laptop will be a 9 pin COM port ( pins sticking out ,male) and you might have either or both at the desktop end ( 25 pin and/or 9 pin male).
you need to conform the COMs port of each PC to enable connection. are you running a modem on the desktop ? go into device manager to find out whic hCOm it is on and also check PORT settings for the COM number of available port.

Rob If in doubt get the Ball Pein Hammer out
