Direct PDF or DOC link does not work

Here is a strange one that I've been struggling with. Clicking on any of the links below should work fine. But if you copy and paste the links directly into the address bar in IE (tried 7 & 8) only the 2nd pair will work. They are the exact same documents (one PDF, one Word DOC just to confirm it is not an Acrobat issue)

This is really evident if you take the links and put them in an email (Outlook 2003 or 2010), send the email to yourself, then click the links within Outlook.

Any ideas as to why?

It works on my system in both IE 8 and firefox, click to go to the link as well as copy paste, all 4 links work as expected.
