Hello!

I have two computers connected directly, via 10/100Mbit ethernet cards. Hardware setup seems to be fine. I have just replaced the cable for a crossover type.
Both computers can ping themselves, but not the other.
adresses are: 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2
subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
(manually configured)
There is a slight traffic detected by XP between the two computers (1235 bytes received), but I can't even ping the other machines.

Could it be a security issue on the XP?

Thank you

Could be the XP firewall.

Chris.

Thanks,

I've tried with the firewall uninstalled, and different network cards, and still, it does not work. :(

fuli42,

Are either of the machines running any Personal Firewall software such as ZoneAlarm, Sygate, Norton Internet Security, etc.?

The 'effect' is very similar to what a firewall would produce, but there is not any kind of firewall software running.

Exactly what happens when you try to ping the other machine? Any error messages or does it just time out?

The Old Man

it simply tiimes out.
However, the Xp machine can sense if the other machine is turned off or on (network cable pluged/unplugged). Also the transfer rate drops from 100Mb to 10Mb as the 98 boots up.

I've just installed a newer, more sophisticated LAN Card (3Com 905-tx), and now my IP settings are lost:
If I start winipcfg I get an error IP-konfiguration missing. (even though I set it manually to 192.168.0.2)

fuli42,

Did you remove the card from the Device Manager and let Windows rediscover it?

Did you reset the TCP/IP attributes?

Try setting the IP address to 192.168.0.2 - subnet mask 255.255.255.0. All other info in the network control panel should be blank. No default gateway, no DNS, no WINS, etc.

Thnxs Ol'Man! ;)

Finally, after a windows setupcor (reinstall), and driver update (and 12 hours) the network suddenly started functioning!!! I was suddenly able to browse the net, see the shares, at 100Mbit/sec!
Probably it was the fault of the old ISA Genius LAN card. Windows didn't report any errors, but it could not cooperate with the one in the XP machine.
With the 3Com card, it at least worked after a reinstall/update.

Thank youi all,
Fuli
