Right now my Exchange 2000 server is using a Smart Host to send mail out to the Internet. If the Smart Host is down for some reason, will the Exchange server automatically try direct delivery?

I may be wrong, but I believe you need to configure the connector to do so. by defaut it will only send to the smart host.

How do I do that? I only see how to set it so that it tries direct delivery first.

That is correct.

You can configure it to try direct delivery first,
but not the other way around.

Are you running on a dynamic IP by chance?

Darrell

Actually my question is kind of moot.

But, using the smart host is the to get mail out
when sending to email servers that block email from
email servers that are on dynamicIP's.
