I am trying to connect my Laptop with a fresh install of Windows 98 Second Edition (it's too old to put 2000 on it) to a workstation with Windows 2000 via direct serial port cable connection. I am able to establish a connection between the two machines, however, if I try to map a shared drive on the host (W2K) machine, I get a request for a password on the guest machine (laptop). I have tried to use the Admin password for the host machine which is the only one that I know exists. I have also made myself an account on the host machine, and verified that "computers connecting directly do not require passwords". I have all the proper services and protocols installed on both machines (IPX/SPX, NetBEUI, TCP/IP, Print and file sharing, etc). The long and short is, I can connect to the machine but can go no further.

No matter what I do or what I enter, it keeps asking for a password and it says it is wrong and to try again. Any ideas?

You need to set up a user on the w2k machine and allow him access. You can set the password there as well.
start/admin tools/computer management/users and groups add user. Then after user added right click on user/ set password.
