Direct Cable Connection Problems

I'm trying to get an old laptop (running Win95) to connect as client to another machine using a null-modem cable.

I've tried connecting to both WinME and Win2000 and am pretty sure the cable is correct according to the spec defined in the Win2000 help file.

When I try to connect the host on WinME and the direct cable network option each remain impassive as the client shows the message that it is disconnected. Occasionally, just before it says that, there is a message saying something like it is verifying username and password. Wherever possible the hosts are set to be as tolerant towards usernames as possible and not to require passwords and the client has a valid (administrator) user name on the Win2000 system anyway.

Has anyone any idea what is going on here? What do I need to do to get the connection working? Eventually the required setup is actually Win95 to WinME but anything working at this stage would be an improvement!

so, are you connecting with serial ports? did you go through windows home networking set-up wizard?

I'm connecting with a parallel cable and went through all the expected procedures.

I've managed to get it working, though only just, by ensuring that there are no protocols around other than NetBEUI.

Since my target machine needs TCP/IP for other things (obviously) this is not really a satisfactory solution and if I try to connect to WinXP, there is clearly going to be a problem since Mr Gates now wants to pretend that he'd never mentioned NetBEUI!

LapLink Pro is working OK but doesn't give me quite the same facilities!

I'm trying to connect windows 98 with Windows Xp.
both as DCC installed. Unable to connect
Windows 98 with Xp. Windows 98 is listening
and XP is still not able to connect.
After some times it gives dial up network
message of redial.

Using Parallel port for connection.

Windows 98 do not have network card. How
do I connect xp with 98?
