I am trying to set up a direct cable connection from my laptop to my desktop, both on windows 98. The process works OK, but regardless of which is the guest or host, the connection cannot find any computers on the network when the connection is made.

I have changed the workgroups so they are the same. But still no joy.

The interseting thing is that when I go into network neighbourhod on the laptop it can see itself. When I do the same on the desktop, there is nothing on its network.

Any ideas on how to get them to talk ????

each computer has to have the same protocol running. Make sure both the laptop and the PC is running Netbeui or IPX/SPX. Also each computer has to log into Client for Microsoft Networks so right-click your network neighbourhood icon and see what protocols you have and what the primary login is for each computer.

As far as I can see, all protocols and adapters are as they should be !

dbevan, sounds like both puters are ok...are you using a cross patch cable & also do have anything up for share (directories) & did you supply username & password

Cable is a prallel Direct Connection cable, file sharing is installed, and there is no user/password on either machine, all I get asked for is the name of the computer to connect to, because it cannot find any computers at all.

Even when the desktop is all by itself, it does not see itself in the network neighbourhood
