DIMENSION ITEM(100), is it double or int array?
how can i tell?

ITEM begins with I therefore it is an int array. As integers are from I to N unless specifically overridden by an IMPLICIT statement or by declarations

eg

IMPLICIT INTEGER(I-N), COMPLEX(C), LOGICAL(B)
REAL LONGITUDE, LATITUDE
