Digtizing Scan

We're making a logo for a robotics team, and I know a little illustrator, but not nearly enough to do what I need to do.

The issue is that we have a hand drawn logo, and need to digitize it.

This is the logo:

How would you go about replicating the picture? (the text can be approximated) If someone would be so kind as to let me know how to go about it, or help me out, that would be amazing.

I'd start with the pen tool.

Trace around the image and letters. Fill with red.

Apply a gradient mesh to the parts that appear faded.

If you want to roughen the edges there are filters and effects that can be used.

All of the above is easily found using your google machine :)
