I've decided to clear out all my films on VHS by capturing them through my (Gainward nVidia FX5600 Ultra VIVO) graphics card, using Windows Movie Maker 2. This seems to work well on some films, but on others a thick white bar appears across the middle of the screen after about ten minutes. This is only visible on the digitized copy during playback. Is this some sort of copy protection (I thought this wasn't possible with analogue formats)?
Jon.

I don't know if this is your problem, but VHS has had copy protection (tape to tape), for years. What you are referring to is DIGITAL copy protection.

Thanks. These are legal VHS films that I bought over the years and want to digitize and ditch the cassettes. How do I get around the copy protection? I bet others have wanted to do this. Jon.

I think the 1.08 version of the vivo driver was the last one without the macrovision protection. Try searching here for it, there was a long thread iirc. Or i might be getting confused with another issue but i know its been discussed before.

Doesnt matter if you legally own the cassettes or not as far as companies are concerned any copying at all is illegal. period.
They just can't do much about it ;), get a less reputable encoder that disables macrovision if i were you, try download.com for trials.

Might as well go all the way - check RadioShack for a box that is used to "clear up" the snow and "interference" when "copying your home videos".

I can't find such a box on radioshack. Tried search strings. Could you tell me where to look? Thanks.

I haven't looked for awhile, they may have discontinued them since everyone has gone to DVD.
