You can create your own digital certificates by using SelfCert.exe that's installed along with Office. SelfCert creates a .cer file that's stored on your local hard drive, and you can then 'attach' this certificate to any macros you create.

My problem is that if I want to distribute my apps within our organisation I have to manually copy the certificate to everyone else's computer, otherwise the fact that the code's signed is worthless.

Is there a way to manage this more efficiently? I was hoping there was something similar to the way you can have shared template directories, i.e. you just stick the certificate on a server and point all the users to it.

Nelviticus,

I use digital signatures on all my code to prevent users being prompted to "Enable Macro's" in Excel.

Thus far, no user has been prompted a second time to trust my code and all seems to work perfectly. These are WinNT & Win2k machines, all running Office 2000.

Hello Leigh,

Do you use certificates created by SelfCert, and if so did you have to copy them to all the machines? I can trust my own code because I have the certificate on my machine, but if I send signed files to other users on the network the checkbox for 'always trust this source' is disabled. I assume that this is because the certificate used for signing isn't present on their machine.

Hi,

Yep, i used SelfCert.exe and No, i just sign each project and when prompted for the first time, the user checks the box and is never prompted again.

Hmm, well thanks for the info, maybe I'm doing something wrong. I'll look into it.
