We have exactly the same problem, my theory is that it is down to routing of SMTP mail on the IMS properties in exchange administrator. As the digital sender is not specifically logged into the server as a user of a specific mailbox then it is essentially routing mail from it's own internal mail server to you exchange server, and if you have routing turned off it will only deal with internal mail and others go nowhere.
