Ok, this is going to be a little long but bare with me:

I have a laptop with a 54G wirless connection, 2.2 GHz machine.
I have a PC which acts as a server with a 10/100 wired connection, and is a 2.8GHz Athalon machine.

Both PC's use XP Pro. Both PC's are connected to an ADSL wireless router - obvioulsy one hard wired the other wireless.

I usually download all my files via the server as thats were they are stored.

Now the question!
Today I started downloading a linux ditribution from the server and received a download speed of average 17 KB/sec. I want to install linux on my laptop so thought that I may as well download it straight onto my laptop, so did that. The average speed for the laptop for the same download was 60KB/sec. This is a 512 DSL line.

Now Im a bit peeved at this and wondering why the server is taking longer to get stuff than the laptop even though they share the same connection. Both machines were not running any other applications or windows updates etc at the time. I can surf on the net with the laptop and it still out performs the PC. I tried it with another few files and it is considerably slower.

How come!?

Any ideas?

Hi,

Check your pc for spyware and virus, use the following tools:

Stinger (
Spybot (
be sure, to download the lastest stinger. and after downloading the spybot, please update it and reboot your pc to Safemode (while restarting your computer, press F8 prior the windows xp startup logo).. Using a safemode in scanning would be best because all the files and drivers are not being used by the system.

Sometimes the machine slows down the data transmission due to spywares. Using Microsoft Anti-spyware as spyware prevention is good.

Currently, I am using these softwares to avoid viruses and spywares.

Anti-virus = AVAST! (Firewall = KERIO (Anti-spyware = MS Anti-Spyware (
Hope this helps.

Maybe a MTU setting that is not optimized on the PC.

Possible... Contact you internet provider and ask them if you should setup the MTU or leave it by default. Other ISP's does not use MTU or you just need to leave it by default.

Good luck.

the wireless router should be have the correct mtu.

which one was slower though the wired or the wireless?
what is the signal strength of the wireless connection?
