Differences in R1 & R2

Can anyone provide me with information on the differences between R1 and R2?

We are having issues with our VB6 app which connects to SQL 2000 SP4 running on various servers. It works fine on 2k and 2003 R2 SP1 but on 2003 R1 SP1 it fails.

I have updated MDAC, checked versions of SQL - now i am onto OS differences.

I would load ASP.NET on non-R2 server. I know that R2 comes with ASP.NET functionality turned on, and that might be making the difference.
