What's the difference between using 100Base-FX, LX, or SX? I have basic knowledge of fiber already, but could not find an answer to my question. Any help appreciated.

So far as I know 100baseFX is the only standard for fiber at 100 megabit.

1000baseSX is a short range (multimode mostly) standard for gigabit using light emiting diodes.

1000baseLX is a longange (mostly single mode) standard for gigabit using laser emiting diodes.

for completenes, 10baseFL is the best standard for 10 megabit fiber. (an older standard was FOIRL) I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.

Thanks for the info. Much appreciated.

Sadly I was wrong.

a 'new' 100baseSX standard was approved in 2001, it is not compatible with 100baseFX, but can autonegotiate with 10baseFL

if 1000baseSX adds auto negotiate features, you could build a 10baseFL/100baseSX/1000baseSX device.

I had never heard of it before, honest. I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.

name Wavelength Distance
10baseFL 800 nm 2000 meters
100baseSX 800 nm 300 meters
1000baseSX 800 nm 220 to 550 meters (62.5 and 50 micron)

100baseFX 1300 nm 2000 meters
1000baseLX 1300 nm 550 to 5000 meters (62.5 or 50 and 9 micron) I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.
