I participate in the MS Access side of Tek-Tips so I don't have much of a clue about HTML but I need some advice(including posting this question someplace else). I recently uninstalled Norton Anti Virus (long story but that's what the Norton site told me to do). After uninstalling, I found that some of my links worked, specifically links to sites like this , but some of my links don't work, specifically links to Threads in TT forums (if I click on this link, thread701-674750, I don't go anywhere). What I'm trying to do is determine what the difference between the two links are so that I can reasonably explain the problem to Norton when I talk to them. Right now, I can't open some of the links on their sites to reinstall the software.
If someone could point me in the right direction I would certainly appreciate it.

Thanks

Paul

You are probably finding that hyperlinks in Outlook messages aren't working either.

This problem is usually fixed by resetting IE

Tools > Options > Programs > Reset Web Settings.

Thank you for the suggestion Chris. It doesn't seem to make a difference. What I have noticed is that I seem to be able to get into web sites but once I'm there, a lot of the internal links don't work properly. Is there a difference between links that take you to a homepage and links that take you around inside the homepage? I assume that it has to do with the registry folders that were deleted when I uninstalled Norton but this is unfamiliar territory for me.

Thanks

Paul

It's starting to sound like that javascript is not functioning correctly. Have you any pop-up blockers installed. alternatively check the security settings in IEs Internet zone it may have been set to high by the uninstall.
I have seen it where Norton decided to block ALL email access after an uninstall (some bits it left behind)

This is how the two links appear when I look at the Source code for this thread

&quot;<A HREF=&quot; TARGET=&quot;_new&quot; Title=&quot;
&quot;<a href=javascript:gothread(701,674750)>Thread701-674750</a>&quot;

Is there some difference between the two that the first one would work and the second one doesn't?
I checked my security settings and they are fine. Set to Medium. I don't have any Pop-Up blockers installed so that shouldn't be an issue either.

Thanks

Paul

The first one is a plain text, the second one uses javascript to direct the browser. And the problem with other sites will be javascript as well because most of the 'cool' menus and mouse over effects all use javascript.

paste this into your address bar and hit enter:
javascript:alert('bla');

if javascript is on you'll get an OK box, if it's off nothing will happen. If javascript is off, then javascript links like the TekTips ones will do nothing.

Go to Tools->Internet Options->Security->Custom Level->Active Scripting
And make sure it isn't 'disabled'

:)

Posting code? Wrap it with code tags: [ignore]
Code:
[/ignore][code]CodeHere
[ignore][/code][/ignore].

When I pasted the line into the Address bar and hit enter, nothing happened. I went to the Active Scripting property in my Options box but it was set to Enabled. I appreciate the suggestions and am willing to try any others that you all might come up with.
Does anyone think I should post this question in the JavaScript forum?

Thanks again.

Paul

You are probably better off trying the Browser issues for IT professionals Forum (forum608), there's probably several javascript problem threads there :)
