I have just started looking into PHP and know next to nothing about it.

Looking on the php.net website I see that there are 2 possible downloads for PHP 4.4.0, one with tar.bz2 and one with tar.gz, in parentheses.

What's the difference between these 2?

Thanks very much,

Stewart

The compression algorithm used on the tarball.

The .tar.gz file is a tarball compressed using gzip.

The .tar.b2 file is a tarball compressed using bz2.

Thanks, I think?!

sleipnir214 - what do you mean by "tarball"? I'm running Windows 2000, is that going to be OK?
chacalinc - I don't understand your post at all.

all my post are based on an OS Unix/Linux (man is a unix/linux command, for "manual pages"), but now I realize that you are running windows. tarball is an archive file in order to have a package of files in only one archive file (.tar in this case) and the you compress this tar file either with gzip or bzip2. You can find lot of info in internet.

Anyway, winzip should be able to descompress and unarchive those files.

cheers.

ooohhh!! BTW, I'm pretty sure that both files are oriented to linux and not windows, take a look for the windows binary distro of PHP (some .exe file).

Cheers.

Thanks Chacalinc, that's all very helpful. I did some more digging around and found a few more bits of info as well.

Thanks a lot,

Stewart
