I think this is a basic question, sorry ( I am a newbie when it comes to Nortel Passport switches.

I am using this config management software and I noticed under the current configurations section, there is Runtime Config and Running-config, what is the difference between the two?

I will appreciate any help you could provide )

What is this config management software ?

Hi Rick,

We are currently evaluating this config management software called Device Authority Suite V3.5.2. This software can authomatically connect to our network devices then download the config files or even push config line changes. That's why I noticed under the Nortel Passport switch group of devices, there is Runtime Config and Running-config.

You can check their website thru this link:

Have you looked at Optivity Switch Manager ?

Use the DeviceManager for right Software Release of Passportit is the better way to configure the passport...

Maybe you can try to do a configuration on the passport. Don't do a save config and check in which of the two: runtime or running the change is made. Then save the config and check what changes in the runtime and running. This way to can figure out which is what.

Thanks for all the help you provided )

We have Device Manager but we use that mainly to monitor or gather data from some Passport switches, mind that if you use this application, you can only connect to a switch one at a time. That's why we are looking into buying this Device Authority Suite to manage a group of switches quite easily (like changing the SNMP community string of all switches in one click of a button).

I will look into this Optivity Switch Manager and see if the software will be useful for us )

What I did is ask the support guy and I got the answer I needed. He explained that Runtime-config is the equivalent of startup-config in Nortel Passport switches.
