Difference between RTrim and RTrim$

In MS Access in the Expression Builder there are number of Built In Functions listed both with and without the $.

What is the significance of the $?

What does it do differently and when should I use the one with the $ and when should I use the one without?

The function ending with $ return a String, the other return a Variant of subtype string.
The $ version is supposed to be faster.
