Can someone explain why if I ping one of my servers I get 'Unknown Host', yet I can TRACERT to it?

eg.

I cannot do this: PING *SERVER*, I get
UNKNOWN HOST

but can do this : TRACERT *SERVER*, I get

tracing route to SERVER.UK.COM

Thanks

It does not happen with all servers. Lamaar75@hotmail.com

Thanks for the reply.

We use DNS to resolve names.

And this happens everytime for this 1 server, right?

One thought I had was if you had a primary and secondary DNS server that maybe when you did your request it was doing a round robin things where request 1 went to server 1 and request 2 went to server 2 and request 3 went to server 1, etc..

But you would think that at sometime your ping request would go to the same server as your tracert.

Sorry I couldn't be any more help Todd VanDerwerken, CCNA, CCDA

What if you try using the fully qualified domain name? IP address?

ie ping server.uk.edu
ping 123.456.789.123

if using NT/2K try
nslookup server

do you have anything in your local hosts table?
