Hi Everyone,

I have a very SIMPLE question really :). Can someone tell me the difference between the Enterprise and Personal Editon of Oracle8i? If I was to install one on my desk top, which one should I install? or it makes no difference. Also, what software should I install on the server... The Enterprise Manager? I apologize if this question is too simple, but I just started reading up on Oracle and with all the info that I have been inundated with my head is spinning. TIA

Hi,

I don't know all of the details of the differences. But, I can tell you Personal Edition
is for Windows 98 and Enterprise Edition is for servers, be they NT or Unix. There
are some limitations on Personal due to limitations of 98. What should you install?
Well if you have an NT desktop and proper licensing, I'd install Enterprise Edition.

Enterprise Manager is a tool kit to perform a lot of DBA functions on your database.
I would install it wherever is convenient. (Then learn the proper SQL line commands
to perform DBA tasks before using Enterprise Manager :) ).

Good luck.

If you're just starting out with Oracle then Personal Edition (PE) is a good place to start.

PE doesn't have, I think, the replication options that EE does. We use it for some lap-top applications and it seems OK.

Your question isn't simple or trivial by the way <smile>

Start off with PE and move on from there. Enterprise Manager is very likely more than you need at the moment -- there's a lot to Oracle and it will blow your mind unless you focus on one aspect of it initially. Mike
