Difference between HPLIP and HPLIP 3

Been awhile since I setup a CUPS server and while I was installing the hplip port I noticed I also have hplip3. I have been to the website and not really sure what the difference is, if any. So my question is regarding whether hplip3 is newer than hplip or if it is more in the supported printers.
