Difference between DSL and ADSL

Can anybody, in laymans terms, please explain the difference between DSL and ADSL. Curiosity is killing the cat!!!Many thanks in anticipation!
 
DSL is the generic term, there are several varieties of DSL (digital subscriber line) IDSL is DSL using ISDN hardware, ADSL is asymetrical DSL faster one direction than the other, SDSL is symetrical, etc. I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.
