Hi Guys,

Can some one explain the difference between Fast Ethernet and Ethernet.

Neto...

"you are running fast to remain in the same place

What is your exact question? Ethernet is a generic term for a form of communications and fast ethernet is a term used for faster speeds mostly used by marketing types I believe the spec is 802.x

The answer is "42"

what is the speed that differentiates an Ethernet port from fast ethernet port.

Neto...

"you are running fast to remain in the same place

Generally:
ethernet - 10 Mb/s
fast ethernet - 100 Mb/s
gigabit - 1000 Mb/s

hth.

Thanks,

The differnce in hardware b/w the ethernet and fast ethernet would only be in the TX and RX or even there is change in the physical medium. If there is a difference in the physical medium what is that !!

Neto...!!!

"you are running fast to remain in the same place

ethernet - 10baseT - Cat 3 cable or up for 100 meters
fast ethernet - 100baseTX - Cat 5 cable or up for 100 meters
gigabit ethernet - 1000baseT - Cat 5 cable or up for 100 meters
10 gig ethernet - 10gbaseT - Cat 6 cable or up for 37 meters
Cat 6A cable or up for 100 meters

I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.

When you use Cat something cable, you will also need the same Cat something ends, plugs, and patch panels.

10 and 100 meg ethernet use 2 pairs of the cable, gig and 10 gig use all 4 pairs of the cable.

I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.

what about optical for gigbit ethernet.
