I have the need to create reports that always link across datasources. I have a custom service defined as a seperate data source, and need to link to a seperate datasource based on (typically) one common field.

CD recommends using sub reports, but as I believe they will need to be linked sub reports, what performance advantages will I see using sub reports, over requiring linking across data sources in one report ? Is the processing quite different ?

Linking is generally going to be faster, though you may find that the linking doesn't provide the type of joins required when using different data sources. Without knowing the type of data sources, and how you will be using them (for instance a subreport at the detail level will be punishing), it's hard to gauge.

I'd try to build a single datasource, creating a link to each data source from within MS Access using ODBC is one common approach. Then you can just use the data sources in MS Access, or a MS Access query which performs the joins and other fitering for you.
