Excuse the teaser, but it is at least partly true. Read on:

The documentation says SuSE Linux 6.2 does NOT support winmodems, but 6.2 installs /dev/hfmodem and there are several source code files for an HCF (dumb) modem.

I bought a U S Robotics external modem, so my Amquest 56K winmodem (Rockwell HCF56K chip set) is sitting on the shelf for now because I have other fires to fight.

If anybody is interested in hacking the SuSE code and needs reference material, a complete copy of Rockwell's HCF56K modem manual is (or at least was) at <A HREF=" TARGET="_new"> Rockwell's commands appear to be similar, if not identical, to the Hayes commands used by all "smart" modems. You will need Acrobat to read the manual. Port addresses etc. are anybody's guess -- neither Amquest nor any other winmodem maker is willing to publish their interface spec.

Enjoy!
