Hello all,
I have a four year old HP Pavillion that's never had issues. When I powered up yesterday I kept getting a black screen with "reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device".

After reading HP guides I checked all the BIOS settings and the HDD was being recognized in the boot sequence

Not knowing what I'm doing...I put a Windows XP installation disc in and re-booted.

I am now the proud owner of an I: drive with 160GB of pure, free memory.

Did I lose everything that was on my C: drive?

Depends what options you selected along the way... However, the fact that you say XP has installed on I: drive suggests it found C: and several others as well. Once you're booted up in I: go check Disk Management and see what it's showing...
