DID trunks on a channel bank?

I have a client who has a T1 brought into his facility and then uses an Adtran 120E to split them into voice and data. The voice comes into the Magix as DID trunks on a T1 card. I need that T1 card for something else (connecting to another Magix) since it is the 3rd card and I can't install 4. Has anyone ever heard of splitting DID trunks off a DSU/CSU into a channel-bank type arrangement so I can install them in the Magix as DID trunks?

I have never seen it. you would have to ask the provider about it i guess. it would be their equip that would split it out. I think the issue would be losing the outgoing side of those trunks. copper DID's are 1 way.

I do have several sites that the CLEC brings in a T1, installs an Adtran IAD, and is able to deliver loop start lines as well as analog DID trunks on the same device. Yes, you get CID on the loop starts, but not on the DIDs, if that's a problem. I would guess that the current T1 into the Magix is NOT a PRI, so you would not be getting CID now.

They don't get CID. Do you agree w/ kwing that copper did's are only incoming? I haven't worked with them since 2w DID on T1 became so prevalent so I am not well-versed in their operation.

Yes, copper analog DID's are incoming only. So you need an assortment of loop start lines, for outgoing calls, and perhaps incoming calls to the "main" number. DID's for, well, Direct Inward Dialing, so extensions can be reached fron the outside without assistance from an operator or automated attendant.

Yes it can be done. You will need a channel bank with DPT channel units or ones that can be optioned as DPT (Dial Pulse Terminate) in whatever quantity for the amount of DID trunks provisioned on the DS1 minus the data. Then you will need the analogue DID module for the Magix which supports 8 trunks. (Analogue DID trunks are POLARITY sensitive.) At this point I realize with 3 DS1s you have 72 trunks, and the Legend/Magix only has capacity for 80 lines/trunks total.

So if you need more than 8 DID trunks, you need to rethink your configuration. Now on the existing DS1s are you using all 24 channels? If not Adtran provides some limited DIGITAL CROSS-CONNECT functions in some of their TOTAL ACCESS packages, and you could set one up to handle 3 DS1s to accomplish your needs to make it work in a variety of ways.

I am just offering some suggestions that may work for your situation.

OK - so this is why I love this forum. I totally forgot about the trunk limitation. I am in favor of merlinman's suggestion of routing the new location through one of the secondary locations and giving it it's own voice mail, but the customer is determined to not pay for the extra T1 and keeps telling me other vendors are recommending switching to a DID board. I will bet you $$$ they never thought about a) the DID being one-way or b) the fact that the point to point T1's require trunk capacity, which is going to cause problems of its own. Thanks so much for your post!
